Review on the Samsung Star Cellphone

Mood - Smiley

As promised, a review on the Samsung S5233W, also known as –  Samsung Star. \<ˆεˆ>/~☆

In this entry, you’ll find out its highlighted features, camera and video functions and quality, miscellaneous functions and more.

NB: This version of Samsung Star that I’m reviewing HAS NO 3G.

<`A´>/

It has been a week now since I bought this phone and by far, no technical problem has occurred — thankfully.

The External Parts of Samsung Star

There are 3 colors available for Samsung Star: White, black and metallic pink.

The screen size is 400 x 240 pixels. Compare its full body size to an iPhone, it’s slimmer and less broader. So take note, you CAN’T use an iPhone cover for Samsung Star because the size don’t complement. Bummer…I know. (Laughs nervously)

The phone is solid, nonetheless. No plastic feeling. <^-^>lll

About the interface…

(Laughs) For somebody who has been using phones with solid buttons, I somehow managed to adjust myself with the touch screen interface.

Yup! Samsung Star is a full touch screen phone~☆. ↓

The sensitivity of the touch censor is just nice, not highly sensitive to a touch neither do you have to tap so hard. There are of course, some useful solid buttons to make navigation easier and faster.

At the bottom, there are 3 buttons being: The ‘Call’ Button, The ‘Back’ Button, and The ‘Cancel’ button which is also the switch off button.

And then at the left side, there’s the volume and zoom button. The battery charger and earphone outlet can also be found on the left side of the phone. ↓

It opens like a latch, which is similar to the LG KF350 Ice-cream phone. ↓

Be careful when leaving the latch open. Don’t brush against it roughly or it might just break off seeing it’s quite loosely intact. >_<

Now on the right side of the phone, there’s the ‘LOCK’ button and ‘Camera’ button. ↑

Having the camera button by the side makes it even more convenient to snap pictures as well as being a quick button to the camera function.

This is how the back of the phone looks like, by the way. ↓

As you can see, there is no flash embedded to the camera. I’ll give you more details on the camera’s usability and quality later in this entry.

But first, we go through the external parts of the phone.

On its top right, a stylus can be pulled out from there. ↓

That goes to say, big thumbs— there’s a stylus to make input easier for you, especially when it comes to ticking small boxes!

Moving on to —

Interacting with the Samsung Star

Let’s begin with the desktop screen. ↓

Samsung Star has a widget sidebar, consisting of shortcuts to files and other applications.

In addition, you can drag out the thumbnail of your choice and leave it on your desktop as shown below. ↓

I dragged out the ‘Games’ shortcut. You can situate it anywhere on the screen. You can drag it back into the sidebar widget as well.

If the screen is too crowded, don’t worry. You have 2 extra desktops. ↓

You can simply swap to the right and left screens, which function as your alternate desktops.

However, changing the front’s wallpaper isn’t going to be very convenient, especially when you want to have different pictures for each slides.

Changing/Customizing the Background

Maybe I haven’t figure out an easy way yet but for the time being, here’s what I do:

Create a new canvas of 720 x 400 pixels, using Adobe Photoshop or any program that allows you to edit pictures. For the 3 different pictures of your choice, you have to make sure they are exactly 240 x 400 pixels. That means you have to crop out any excessive parts.

After you have cropped them out nicely, drag them to the 720 x 400 pixels canvas and arrange them to the order of your choice, like which do you want to be set in the middle and so on.

Example:

Troublesome…Yea… <_  _>lll

As for themes, sadly there are only 2 themes available: Red and Green. ↓

Though, you can change the background of the Menu to your liking. But the black opacity remains.

Note: There are 2 tabs on the top: Main Menu and the Shortcut Tab which will take you to Communications and to other applications.

For more customization, Samsung Star allows you to select your choice of Font Type. ↑

Methods of Inputting Text

The good thing about Samsung Star’s text input is that there are 3 ways to do so.

First being the standard method of keying in the text. ↓

The virtual buttons are reasonably big, so it’s like tapping on a solid button thus easy to adjust your reflexes.

If you prefer using the QWERTY keypad, tilt the phone horizontally and it will activate the QWERTY keypad function. ↓

It’s easier to switch to symbol and number mode however, the keys are much smaller. With that, perhaps the stylus might be favorable to you.

And if you’re not down with that — The Handwriting function is at your disposal. <o_o>

Therefore, there are alternatives to make texting easier and more convenient. <^-^>b

Wi – Fi Feature

Samsung Star’s Wi-Fi feature is very simple to use. Click on the application and it will lead you to the screen above. Tap on the round Wi-Fi button and it’s activated. Next thing to do is tap the ‘Search’ virtual button and it will search for Wi-Fi networks within the area. Samsung Star’s Bluetooth works the same way too.

Speaking of connecting to the Internet, the browser program quite standardize. You can view it in landscape mode just by tilting the screen.

About installing another browser, namely Opera Mini — please scroll down to the Nifty-Gritty section. <^v^>/

Camera and Video Quality

Samsung Star is equipped with a 3.2 mega pixel camera — NO flash and NO auto-focus feature. The quality is quite satisfying but taking photos indoors and dim-lighted places might be a disappointment.

So if you want to enhance the photos, you can toggle the scene mode; Sun light, cloudy, fluorescent — to whichever is appropriate. Plus, you can adjust the brightness. There are also other features such as the Smile Shot, Burst Shots and so on.

Anyway, here are some photos that I took using the Samsung Star phone. ↓

[Sorry, I don't have anything nice to take photos of. Been staying indoors most of the time. (Laughs nervously)]

Taken in a room, lighting ain’t that good so…. ↑

So is the quality up to your satisfaction? You think about it yourself. (Laughs)

But I must admit, the quality isn’t so sharp and crispy. The colors aren’t too vibrant either. <T_T>

Editing and Enhancing the Photos

Editing a picture using the Samsung Star can be rather fun for you can add a memo, text, emoticons and clip art on the screen.

My favorite is the ability to scribble some stuffs on the picture, with the help of the stylus. (Laughs)

I made a mess out of Auwlithe’s face… (Laughs nervously) ↑ <^-^>lll

Video Quality

The video below is a sample video that was recorded using the Samsung Star. See for yourself…

… I know…Sheep is not a good and fluent speaker. <;__;> (Tears)

Other Nifty-Gritty

Battery Life

Life span of the battery is a let down. With minimum use, it can last up to maybe 3 days. It really depends on how much you use your phone. It can drop a bar in one or more in one day.

Therefore to really conserve its energy, I suggest you switch off the Vibration Feedback. The vibration will response whenever you tap on an icon or so thus, unnecessary battery drainage.

Switch it off, including key tones if you are alright with that.

Try to minimize the unneccessaries and Samsung Star should be able to keep up with you. <^v^>/

Memory Card

According to the manual, Samsung Star can accept an 8GB MicroSD card. As for its phone memory, baa — Not sure. <_  _>lll

Gmail

(Laughs nervously)

Sorry, sheep can’t help you here. Sheep is also facing difficulties in setting up her Gmail account. I keep getting the DNS error. <≥A≤>/

I also tried for Hotmail but the settings were to no avail.

Suppose I manage to figure this out, I update this entry.

Opera Mini

For a few days, I had problems installing Opera Mini 4.2 into the Samsung Star. For a start, it appears that there isn’t a version meant for Samsung Star. I tried downloading versions that were meant for other Samsung Stars but it was futile.

Finally, I found another way!

Sheep downloaded the Opera Mini ver.4.2 for Nokia N79 and installed into Samsung Star — Successfully! <OAO>!

You can download it here: Click

Select version for N79.

And voila~

If it doesn’t work, then the problem probably lies in your browser profile or network setting. This, sheep can’t help you. <_  _>lll

Misc.

Other tools include:

  • Voice recorder
  • Loud speaker (when on call)
  • Memo (can lock it with a pin number for privacy)
  • Stop watch
  • World clock
  • Converter (length, height, currency etc)
  • Alarm
  • Calculator

!! Finale !!

All in all, personally Samsung Star is quite an ok phone. I have no complaints…Other than it keeps reverting to phone memory as default storage after I plug it in the comp to make transfers. <_  _>lll

At this moment, everything seems fine and dandy. No technical problems and not much difficulties in interacting with the phone.

To this end, may my review be of help~! <^-^>/

Ms Aya the sheep, making a run now.

Baa-bai~♥!

    I like the video XD
    Sushi da!~
Hehehe seems like Sheep-chan too cautious with her sentence in the video ^^”"”

Souka, but I wonder why there are only 2 themes available, like LG Ice Cream.
Dino will get bored easily if the themes cannot be changed.

I like one of your desktop. Rainbow background =)
If I have this phone..I might consider putting Shou and Tora as my wallpapers xDDDD hehehehe

  2. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Dino-chan

Thanks. (Laughs nervously) Yea, I had to be careful with the way I speak. Sheep isn’t a good speaker.

Kind of sad that only 2 ordinary-looking themes are available. Was hoping for more colors and patterns. U guess Nokia and Sony Ericsson phones beat other to this.

The rainbow is sweet, isn’t it? (Laughs) Shou and Tora! Who will be in the middle kana? (^v^*)

    Konbanwa, Sheep-chan!

I’m always grateful when reading such product reviews by Sheep-chan. It really helps if you are considering getting a new phone.

Also, it seems that the camera and video quality of your new phone are not too bad at all! or perhaps it is just Sheep-chan’s photography abilities, that makes absolutely everything look pretty! *envious!*

mah… what does the opera mini programme do?

  6. kioko says:

    Woah awesome review again!
A touch screen phone now seems pretty tempting to me lol, and I really enjoy that video hehe~~ I love your Baa~~^^

And You know ever since I came across to your LG Ice Cream review I become addicted to your blog haha (of course considering the fact that it’s your review that makes me decided to buy that Ice Cream phone~!)

By the way I noticed the notebook behind your phone, do you usually write down your entries first before typing in? Coz I do so sometimes, especially when I dont have the computer near me haha

    Is it okay while wi-fi-ing?
    Any problem searching the connection?

  8. CandiceIceY says:

Hi hi.. I was just wondering how much is the price range?

  9. Sandage says:

Cool!, you scribble your entries on a notebook before actually posting them…like me^^. This new phone of yours seems like a nice device :)

I’m not into touch-screen gadgets though, because for some strange reason tapping on a touch screen makes my hands sweat, and sweaty hands is in my “things I really, really, really hate” top 5 list, but I liked it, goes with your girlish personality.

OMFG!, I wish there was a challenge like that in one of the japanese food joints I regularly visit, it’d be piece of cake to make my noodle bowl free, I can eat a ton of that thing^^. I’ll just have to stick to the happy-hour chinese food buffete!.

  10. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Pix

(Laughs) Dead Space technology is on-screen. Don’t have to bury your head to check your inventory and missions. I especially like the map trail; very easy to follow.

Nuclear? Hey, we’ve talked about this before! We might end up destroying the world if we drop our phones! (Laughs)

    ————————————————————
    Dear Krayle

You’re scouting for a new phone? (Laughs)
Opera Mini is a mobile browser that allows you to surf the net. It minimizes the size and photos (as well as cost of surfing, I think) so that it won’t take too long to load.

Haha, I simply snap photos. Sometimes they are crooked or so. (Laughs nervously)

    ————————————————————
    Dear kioko

Baa~ I hope that addiction of yours isn’t serious. (Laughs) It would be problematic.

Hey, you just got your ice-cream phone so don’t think of other phones just yet! (Laughs)

Regarding your question, yes — I write the points in my notebook before blogging. Not for every entry though. Just so I won’t lose grasp of my thoughts and ideas.

    Haha, we’re writers! \(^v^*)/

    ————————————————————
    Dear Dino-chan

Akan’ ya! W705 is waiting to fall in your hands. Don’t betray it! (Laughs)

This phone’s Wi-Fi is ok. No problems so far. When I have difficulties connecting, it’s the Wi-Fi’s signal, not the phone’s fault.

    ————————————————————

    Dear Candice IceY

I bought mine for RM1190. No goodies (Eg: Memory card, cover) included. Bought it from Samsung retail itself. Else where, I have no clue to how much they are selling, sorry.

    ————————————————————
    Dear Sand

That makes the 3 of us; Sand, kioko and sheep. (Laughs) We scribble notes before we blog! Wooo!

    …What are the remaining 4? (Laughs) (^-^)/

Hehe, how about you drop this challenge idea into their suggestion box? (^v^) (Laughs) Worth a shot. And if you really do down that huge bowl of noodles, do record a video of your glory! (Laughs)

  11. Sandage says:

Actually there is a video of that, I don’t know if I’m gonna have the nerve to upload it anytime soon but I’m gonna try when I feel ready to take the shame… I mean, even a man looks disgusting eating like a piggy swine

I’m not sure if they even have a box for suggestions, I think I’m gonna have to suggest a suggestion box for starters ha ha ha.

  12. kioko says:

LOL dont worry~~ I dont think it’s a bad sort of addiction but I truly enjoy reading your blog^-^ I love how the entries all sound so light-hearted (and sometimes serious and meaningful~)

I would NEVER think of any phone just yet haha, especially I’ve ALWAYS want a flip-japanese-DoCoMo-look-alike phone hehe (KAT-TUN has advertised for DoCoMo phones so having this Ice-Cream phone can remind me of them xD)

*Nods* same here! Funny enough ideas usually spark up when I’m wandering around doing nothing lol

  13. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Sand
    Hahaha!
Awesome! Hurry up and find the guts to air that video, man!
Maybe you can give me a few pointers on how to eat fast and furious!
    (Laughs)Good luck on that. (^-^)lll
    ——————————————————-
    Dear kioko
(Cries in joy) My thoughts and ideas are being accepted as meaningful. Uwaa~~~! You’re too kind!
Oh yes, I saw the commercials. I wonder if the phones are cool or Kat-Tun made them look extra cool…Oh come on, Japan…Don’t be so selfish! Make your phones more user-friendly to other countries, please! This may help their economics grow!!!
(Laughs) True. So we must never leave home without a notebook and a pen! (^v^)/

  14. krayle says:

Sheep-chan! well, if your pictures are crooked, they are artistically so! (: and yes, I am looking for a new phone, or rather, just hoping that I will be able to get an iPhone soon… ):

  15. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Krayle

Cool, an iPhone! What color are you getting? Black or white? Wait! Let me guess — Black?
Because I see most people owning a black iPhone rather than white. I wonder if there are any differences. (_ _)lll Baa~

  16. kioko says:

haha I do meant it, like your reviews and “how to write a good blog” posts~ I learnt a lot and most daily posts are fun to read too^-^
Maybe KAT-TUN makes the phone extra cool? LOL I have actually seen the real things on sale here, but they’re a tiny bit expensive and the phones gotta be unlocked first, so that means not all the functioms can be used – not to mention the everything in the phone is all in japanese~~

Yupyup pen and a notebook are things I wouldnt go without when I go out hehe~ what else you wouldnt go without?

  17. krayle says:

I have no idea! When the time comes, I will see which matches better. :D D perhaps I will get the white just to be special. But then again, an iPhone is still a very far-off dream for me. ):

  18. Ms Aya says:

    Dear kioko
It’s a pity, some functions can’t be used. Somehow will have the incomplete and handicap feeling. Otherwise it would be a dream come true for all the docomo fans. (Laughs)
Baa, I bring a book and a dictionary along. The English dictionary is very useful but the downside is — too many things too lug. Plus, feel awkward entering bookshops with so many books in my arms. People might get the idea that sheep is stealing. (Tears)
    ———————————————————————————
    Dear Krayle
Don’t say that. Who knows? Someone might present it to you. (Laughs)
Besides iPhone, what other phones are you prospecting?

  19. krayle says:

    Dear Sheep-chan,
I considered importing a keitai from Japan for the longest time! but I know that as much as it is pretty, it will cause me alot of grief from not being able to use its functions fully, simply because the newer and prettier phones just cannot be unlocked fully. ): has Sheep-chan considered doing that before?

  20. SPITxFIRE says:

yosh! new phone!!!! LOOK NICE! and with the ).( too! :D

  21. kioko says:

*Nods nods* totally but I guess I would definitely get a docomo phone once i start earning my own money^^
I cannot go without my wallet (duh!), iPod, phone, lipbalm, camera and a pack of tissue lol

  22. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Krayle
ALMOST wanted to buy a Japanese keitai. I even e-mailed for more inquiries. But before I could decide whether to get a Japanese keitai, I then discovered the ice-cream phone. (Laughs)
I read from here and there that using a Japanese keitai in our country is very inconvenient to the point we have to format the files before we can transfer to the comp. [?]
    —————————————————————————–
    Dear Spit
(Laughs) ) . ( If don’t control my diet, sheep will be like this in no time: /( . )\
    The normal male body: | . |
    —————————————————————————–
    Dear kioko
    A pack of tissue! A must-have in a girl’s bag!
To clean the tables and toilet bowl seats!
The other day, sheep ran out of tissue and had to bear with the wet toilet seats. (Shivers)
Then when I read kioko’s comment on my cellphone — sheep regretted not reading it any earlier. (Tears)

  23. kioko says:

    LOL! Totally~~
Usually I will have more than one pack of tissue too, and it just keep everything clean (and one of most important things of all – your pack of tissue can be your life-saver when you happened to go into a toilet cubicle which runs out of tissue paper ><)

  24. krayle says:

    Sheep-chan~~

I’m not so sure about the reformating files, but I know that ultimately you won’t quite get your money’s worth for the whole hassle of shipping over and stuff. Because alot of the functions are unable to be unlocked outside of Japan. But of course, some people would still put up with it for the sake of having a unique and cool phone… (:

That’s why I was quite surprised that you had gotten a new phone so fast. Was the ice cream phone serving you that badly? ):

  25. Saruchan says:

Awesome phone !! How much is it ? I might want to get one , since my phone is breaking down .. ( i know it has only been a year ) .. I bet its cheaper than the iphone @___@

  26. Ms Aya says:

    Dear kioko
    Hahaha!
    True, true!
Some women can be very inconsiderate by taking as much tissue as they can for themselves! Well, it happens here a lot.
    —————————————————————————
    Dear Krayle
There’s nothing wrong with my ice-cream phone — at all. I just wanted a Wi-Fi phone and I have to admit, I got this Samsung phone out of my spur of the moment. (o_o)
By the time everything seeped in, I was like, “Damn! Did I just buy a phone!? I thought it was just a thought! A mere thought!”
The power of credit card.. (Cries)
    —————————————————————————
    Dear Saru-chan
I bought mine for RM1190. You can get it much cheaper, as low as RM850+. With 3G or not, I don’t know.
Haha, in my Twitter — you want me to give you my Samsung phone? (Laughs) Dear, it’s pink in color.

  27. kioko says:

……….and most of the tissues end up on the floor eventually ><

  28. krayle says:

    Dear Sheep-chan,

It’s wonderful to have spending power. Which I do not possess currently )): *weeps* but yes, wi-fi is important, ne! >:3

  29. chocolate says:

where did you get the samsung star???

  30. Saigon Tom says:

When you get the DNS error with wifi, turn off the phone, wait a few seconds, turn on again. Re-connect to the wifi and it will work. Don’t know why this happens but it happens fairly often. Otherwise the wifi works great and the browser is OK. Opera does not support landscape mode or I’d switch to that. Text input is also more difficult with Opera.

  31. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Chocolate
…Got it from a handphone shop? Samsung retailer shop.
    ———————————————————————–
    Dear Saigon
Thanks for sharing some useful information here.
For the latest Opera Mini (4.2), you can browse in landscape mode.

  32. Winnie says:

hei, i juz wana ask which 1 of it better, ice cream or samsung?
both of it attracted me >w< .
i cant decide which to buy.

i do sms alot samsung was easier,
but i like the cute patern like icecream oso TwT

  33. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Winnie
Well, since you sms a lot, you better consider properly whether you want a Samsung Star because it’s a touch screen base phone.
If you can handle touch screen interface very skillfully, then it should be convenient for you to sms.
Also, it depends what features and functions you are targeting, such as camera quality, memory storage, sound, wifi and so on.
By the way, if you want Samsung Star, do keep in mind that there is a 3G version of Samsung Star (can make video calls).

  34. Winnie says:

    does samsung got T9 function?

  35. misa says:

i need to know…how many languages u can write using this?…does the phone got korean lang?..tq..

  36. Ms Aya says:

Mine has English, Chinese, Malay language, Thai, Indonesian and Tien Viet.

    No Korean, sorry.

  37. transk_d7 says:

hello, wow glad was able to tumble in your blog, its quite a help if u may to others..im from iloilo ct n like u was able to buy ds samsung star wifi, can i ask a favor? if u can help me figure out HOW TO CHANGE D SMS(TEXT) BACKGROUND TONE?gudness been figuring it ds 4 3 days but to no avail..thnx n advance

    ed

  38. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Transk
In your desktop, click the side button (the external volume button) and a wheel will appear. Set it to zero.
It will however, not only mute the beeping tone while smsing but also each time you tap on something, that beeping tone is gone.

  39. transk_d7 says:

    Dear Aya,
thnx 4 d swift response, it did help my concern.Just one more thing, I want to know if you also experience the life span of the battery is so disappointing? I mean I had it fully charged, the next thing I know for only a half day of use (text, music, some calls..) it is already drained? what gives?tsk tsk tsk….thnk u so much…

    ed

  40. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Transk
In a day, I can take lots of pictures and sms but only a bar will drop. Perhaps you can try switching off the vibration feedback and minimize the backlight timing or something?

  41. Elena says:

    Hi Aya,
I really like the backgrounds that you used for your phone (: where did you get them?

  42. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Elena
I googled for the pictures. Can’t exactly remember where I got the rainbow picture but it you want the tea pot, here it is:

    http://gastronormous.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/teapot-with-hat.jpg

  43. Elena says:

Thank you so much ^^ now i can change my background once again :D I also can’t find where you change the font o.0 its not on the settings….

  44. Ms Aya says:

    Dear Elena
    Strange..It should be there. Try:
Menu → Settings → Display and Light → Font type

  45. Elena says:

    yeah its not there o_O

  46. Ms Aya says:

…Ok…That’s weird! (OAO)!!! How can it not be there!?

    Sorry, I can’t help you. (Tears) (;__; )

  47. jean says:

    thank you :D

  48. Ms Aya says:

In the front desktop of your phone, click the side buttons (which is the volume buttons). You can lower the keypad tone and vibration feedback by doing so.

  49. jean says:

@ms aya: thank u! this forum is rili a great help! thanks a lot… :)
